Master-Modul "Developmental Genetics"

Audience: Master-Students only

LECTURE: The module will focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Drosophila melanogaster development. We discuss morphogen gradients, axis formation, segmentation, and organ formation, among other topics. SEMINAR: Presentations on topics in developmental biology. EXPERIMENTS: We will perform experiments including the following: Expression of proteins in insect cells, analysis by western blot, analysis of subcellular markers in transgenic Drosophila lines by microscopy, localization of transposon insertions in the genome by PCR, in situ hybridization to detect gene-specific mRNAs in tissues, ectopic expression of subcellular markers with Gal4 driver lines, immunohistochemical detection of expression of reporter genes, introduction to fluorescence microscopy and photo documentation. Responsible: Prof. Dr. Achim Paululat, Dr. Maik Drechsler and Priv. Doz. Dr. Heiko Harten

Drosophila embryos, stained for proteins involved in axis formation, segmentation and neural development. Antibody staining.

Ectopic expression of the Eyeless transcription factor in the antenna or leg induces extra eyes. We will study such flies using an scanning transmission electron microscope.
